Since former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi founded ItaliaViva in 2019, SupporterBase has been central to the party’s engagement strategy, supporting over 100,000 volunteers, members, local coordinators, and donors. We connected with the party’s lead campaigner to understand how ItaliaViva leverages SupporterBase to keep supporters involved in every corner of Italy. Here’s what he told us. 

Local leadership with a national reach

SupporterBase has been instrumental in running ItaliaViva’s extensive “coordinatori” programme, which empowers 168 local leaders across Italy. These volunteers are at the heart of ItaliaViva’s organising strategy, responsible for mobilising volunteers and maintaining a steady drumbeat of engagement in their respective communities. ItaliaViva shared that with many of ItaliaViva’s volunteers coming from an older generation, digital competency can vary widely. SupporterBase offers an intuitive interface that makes it easy for volunteers to rally support and coordinate events—even if they’re not particularly tech-savvy. 

Organising in our local language

The Italian political party faces a common challenge: most of their volunteers are more comfortable using technology in their native language. SupporterBase offered a game-changing solution by enabling ItaliaViva’s 168 local leaders to organise and engage volunteers in Italian. By localising the language on the platform, ItaliaViva empowered volunteers across generations to lead with confidence and ease in their own language. Prioritising data privacy and trust

ItaliaViva’s use of SupporterBase isn’t just about mobilisation—it’s about building trust with their supporters. By leveraging SupporterBase’s unique privacy settings, ItaliaViva’s local coordinatori can connect with volunteers without accessing sensitive personal information, such as addresses, emails, or phone numbers. This means coordinatori can lead communications with other supporters effectively while the party remains compliant with GDPR standards and beyond. 

This unique privacy feature also ensures there are no accidental data breaches that could compromise the most valuable resource of any campaign—its supporters’ contact data—by preventing it from being shared with other political parties or third parties.
